I love Albert Einstein. I have since high school when I found a coffee table book at a High School friend’s house, “Essential Einstein.” The book was filled with black and white photography and quotes. Both his face and his words stuck with me. Today, as I work with new brands and create digital experiences for my clients, I have found that many of Einstein’s quotes are relevant when thinking about creating and building a brand.
Here are my the Top 5 Albert Einstein quotes all brands would do well to think about.
1. You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.
One could say Virgin and Southwest did this better than anyone in the air travel space. A great book on this subject to check out is Game-Changer by David McAdams.
2. Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.
When I think of imagination I think of Netflix. They have been a game changer. Logic got Blockbuster only so far, imagination made Netflix who they are today. It started with how they treated their employees. Another great read is Good to Great by Jim Collins.
3. Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
Etsy comes to mind. Any Warren Buffet book will give you insight on why value is so important. By the way, integrity goes hand in hand with offering value.
4. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.
5. Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
Items 4 and 5 the simple award goes to Apple. They take the prize for delivering simple products and explaining them simply. If you would like some insight on the simple approach consider Design Like Apple: Seven Principles For Creating Insanely Great Products, Services, and Experiences by John Edson.
